Volunteer Specializations

Since most of the classroom volunteers are recruited from the available pool of retired technical people in the southern Maine area, the particular volunteers available change from time-to-time. Volunteers are added and occasionally a volunteer retires. Each of the volunteers attends a training and orientation program before being introduced to the science teachers.  The training program has been revised extensively over the years. The agenda for the latest training program which was conducted last year is included in the following pdf: Volunteer Training (download Adobe Reader for free at Adobe.com if you cannot open this document).

The following is a list of volunteer scientists available to schools at the present time. In some cases there are two or more individuals who meet the description.

  • Chemist. Specializing in physical chemistry and commercial chemical product development before retirement. This volunteer has considerable classroom experience and has worked on special programs dealing with: Buoyancy and Density, Electrical Batteries, and Experimental Design.
  • Biochemist. Retired following career in academic medical research.
  • Physicist. Retired from college teaching.
  • Physicist. Retired from full-time college teaching. Still teaches astrophysics at Maine University. Considerable MSSV classroom experience. Experience in mentoring in math and general science.
  • Applied Physicist/Electronics Engineer. Retired from consulting engineering practice. Extensive MSSV classroom experience.
  • Mathematician and Science Generalist. Retired as head of math education department at Syracuse University. Has extensive MSSV classroom experience in electricity and magnetism programs.
  • Chemical Engineer. Retired. Has worked as MSSV volunteer trainer for many years.
  • M.D. Retired. Broad knowledge of biological subject and general science.
  • Mechanical Engineer. Considerable classroom experience.
  • Biochemist. Some classroom experience with 6th grade science students. Interested in astronomy and space subjects.
  • Mechanical Engineer/Marine Engineer. Not retired but sponsored by his employer for regular participation in program on a regular basis for many years.
  • Same as above but in different geographical area.
  • Electrical Engineer. MSSV experience in special program on “weighing the planets” and Jr. Solar Sprint program.
  • Electrical Engineer. Has many years MSSV experience with special programs on “small motors” and other special programs that change from year to year.
  • Civil Engineer. Limited availability due to other commitments but available for assignment.
  • Electrical Engineer. Retired.  Was volunteer trainer for MSSV for many years.
  • Geologist and Environmental Scientist.

Volunteers

Group of volunteers during a training session. These people have constructed some special equipment for demonstrations of Newton's laws. We used to give the equipment to the schools. Now MSSV tends to maintain ownership of the equipment to share with other schools.

Volunteer

As part of the "Buoyancy and Density" program, a volunteer shows an example of Archimedes' principal. Note the simple equipment used.

Volunteer and Students

One of the MSSV volunteers (retired electrical engineer) works with 8th grade students on a project of constructing a simple electric motor.
